Holding Space in Leadership: Lessons from Theatre, Teaching & Intercultural Work

After a very long pause, I’m finally sharing a new Intercultural Conversations episode again. I wish the gap had a more exciting reason… but honestly, it was technical errors. The kind that make you question whether you should even keep going. I kept trying anyway. And this week, it finally worked. The edit is still not perfect, but I loved the conversation!

New episode: “How to Hold Space: Lessons from Theatre, Teaching & Leadership” with Lily Kelting is now live on Intercultural Conversations.

In this conversation, Lily and I explore what “holding space” really looks like in real life when you’re leading, teaching, facilitating, or simply being with another human. We talk about presence, power, and the urge to “fix,” especially when someone’s perspective is different from our own.
And it feels like the right time to release this.
Because if we want stronger teams, healthier communities, and cultures where people actually belong…we need more space.

Space to pause before reacting.
Space to listen without rushing to correct.
Space where different perspectives can exist, so we can come together without anyone shrinking themselves to fit.

(That, to me, is the heart of holding space: walking alongside someone without trying to control the outcome.)
