Leading decisions in diverse teams
’ve often found that, hashtag#diversity doesn’t just sit in the room, it speaks in meetings, shapes decisions, and nudges teams in different directions. When you bring together people across genders, nationalities, and functions, the way decisions are made shifts. Sometimes slowly. Sometimes with friction. Often with valuable outcomes.
Diverse teams can lead to better decisions, but only when leaders know how to navigate the mix. Here’s what I’ve seen work well:
- Teams bring in varied lenses—risk-taking, consensus-building, and long-term thinking, all shaped by cultural and personal context
- This range helps identify blind spots, challenge assumptions, and create more rounded solutions
- But it needs deliberate facilitation to avoid misunderstandings, decision fatigue, or unspoken tensions
Some practical tips I share with leaders:
1. Clarify how decisions will be made: is it majority vote, consensus, or leader-led? Set expectations early
2. Create space for slower processors: some cultures and personalities value reflection over speed
3. Watch out for silence: it doesn’t always mean agreement
4. Use hashtag#frameworks that blend logic and emotional insight to help everyone feel seen and heard
The real power of diversity isn’t just in having it, it’s in learning how to work with it.
