Breaking Age Bias: Let Expertise Speak
In hashtag#intercultural training, one might expect that expertise overshadows all else. Yet, navigating through my career, I've often encountered the invisible barrier of age bias. Despite dedicating my life to bridging intercultural gaps, my relatively younger age (I'm 32) sometimes casts a shadow over my professional capabilities, until I speak.
Below are some of my insights over the years:
1. Recognize and Reflect: Understand that hashtag#bias isn't about right or wrong; it's a protective mechanism. Acknowledge its presence and actively work to overcome it by working on making an impactful first impression.
2. hashtag#Communicate Clearly: When I share my knowledge clearly and confidently, doubts often disappear, showcasing the power of expertise irrespective of age. Make it a practice to articulate your work and achievements effectively to build trust quickly.
3. Value Trust: My hashtag#career has been significantly shaped by those who looked beyond age and trusted my expertise, resulting in a decade of enriching, successful partnerships. Cultivate trust by demonstrating reliability and consistency in your professional engagements.
As I conclude this post, its important for me to mention that the words above come from a very vulnerable place within me. I am fully aware that its not always possible to match the depth and world view that can only come as we grow older. However, I hope if you are a young professional, especially a young female professional, you can silence that little voice in your head that sometimes tells you that you are not good enough, because quite often our own biases work against us.
As we continue to engage across cultures, and the spectrum of hashtag#gender let’s prioritize hashtag#knowledge and experience as the true measures of expertise.
